I was just a sophomore in college and was just starting out in ministry. I had two little rural churches that I was preaching at and they were suffering through my growing pains with a lot of grace and endurance. I returned home for Christmas vacation and found that the church in which I grew up was in the middle of a very nasty church split. People I had known for years were saying the most awful things about each other and of my father (their minister.) I was so torn apart by this experience that I quit ministry altogether. My thinking at the time was “I will have nothing to do with church people ever again.” Of course, God had other plans.
Today, we will discuss the calling of the disciples. The calling is an irresistible call that continues to nudge you throughout life. Each of us have a calling. Most people are not called into ministry, but all are called into discipleship. It never ceases to amaze me how some people are called and do all sorts of things in the church – often with little to no recognition. They just do it and get their own satisfaction from it. They have been called, they answer that call and the Body of Christ moves forward.
As this church is moving forward into its bright future, what is your calling? Is God nudging you into doing something?
This blog consists of reflections written by the minister each week for the Sunday bulletin. We hope that you enjoy the musings!
